Fermo & Torre di Palme

We will arrive at Girfalco Hill from whose summit you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Monte Conero, the Marche hills, the Adriatic Sea.

In the park you will admire the Cathedral of Fermo, Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, with its majestic Romanesque-Gothic facade in white stone. Inside, among the various works, are preserved frescoes of the 14th century, and a paleo-Christian sarcophagus of the 3rd 4th century located in a 13th-century crypt.

A few minutes walk from Girfalco Hill takes us to Piazza del Popolo from which you will begin the exploration of Fermo which preserves an intact Renaissance urban layout. Starting from Piazza del Popolo, one of the most beautiful in the Marche, there are a series of itineraries dotted with churches, noble palaces, courtyards and artistic portals.

At 11.00 am accompanied by a guide you will visit the Roman Cisterns, a perfectly preserved subterranean architectural complex of the Augustan age, the Sala del Mappamondo, defined by the National Geographic as one of the most beautiful libraries in the world, located inside the Palazzo dei Priori, and the famous painting Adoration of the Shepherds by Rubens, the Teatro dell’Aquila, one of the most important eighteenth-century Italian theaters.

After lunch, we will move to Torre di Palme, a medieval village, perched on a rocky outcrop towards the sea.

Walking through the narrow streets you will come across fine medieval churches: il Tempio di Sant ‘Agostino (XIV-XV century) where the polyptych Madonna and Child is located, one of the most important works of the Venetian painter Vittore Crivelli; la chiesa di Santa Maria a Mare (XII-XIII century) inside which you will find many valuable works of unique workmanship such as those of the Sangiorgese Sigismondo Nardi; l’Oratorio di San Rocco with the emblem of Torre di Palme.

You will be amazed by the beautiful crenellated tower built around the 13th century to defend the ancient castle of Torre di Palme.

The tour will end with the visit to the recently inaugurated Archaeological Museum where the remains of a Piceno necropolis from the 6th century B.C. are esposed.

For a visit to the Roman Cisterns it is advisable to wear clothing suitable for the humid climate of the structure.
